Short-term loan

What it is

A short-term loan works like a term loan with the repayment compressed, usually into a year or less. Less time for interest to accrue means less total interest paid, and a correspondingly larger payment each period.

It suits an unexpected cost, a slow stretch, a short project, or an opportunity with a date on it. What it does not suit is a return you are guessing at.

When it is the wrong answer
The payments start on schedule whether the thing you funded has paid off yet or not. Judge it on the weekly figure, not the monthly one.

What it gives you

When it is the right one

  • Less total interest than the same sum over a longer term
  • A payoff date visible from the start
  • No restriction on what the capital is used for
  • No out-of-pocket fees

Business Cash Advance

Amount
$5,000 – $500,000
Cost
10% – 35% factor

The cash advance is priced as a factor and the other five as a rate. A factor of 1.2 on $100,000 is $120,000 to repay whether it clears in six months or eighteen; settling it early does not reduce it. Interest falls when the balance falls. Putting a factor beside a rate compares two different things.
